Conceptualized as early as the 1940s and developed in the 1960s, it provides an immediate response to situations of psychological crisis. It aims to stabilize the individual and prevent the escalation of distress, by assessing the nature and severity of the crisis, including suicidal risk. It is used in emergency care, acute mental health, and substance abuse.
